Useful information about Sougia
Located on the south-west coast of Crete, the small village of Sougia stands out for its long, beautiful, pebble beach and its laid-back atmosphere.
Standing around 60km from the city of Chania, visitors take a spectacular drive through a narrow and winding road beautifully set among steep slopes and olive groves that gradually descends to the sea.
The village offers a complete tranquil retreat whilst providing a number of restaurants, bars, cafes and convenience stores.
A hikers delight, as the village stands in the middle of countless trails, mountain paths and gorges including the renowned Samaria gorge and the E4 European long distance path.
Bus of Sougia
- Public transport by bus runs twice every day (including Sundays) from chania to sougia and vice versa.
- The first bus departs Chania at 5:00 in the morning, arriving in sougia at around 7:00 and leaving immediately back to chania.
- Second Bus from Chania is at 13:45 arriving in Sougia at about 16:00 and leaving back to Chania after the ferry from Agia Roumeli (Samaria gorge end) arrives in Sougia, at about 18:30.
About our Ferry
- The boat connects Sougia with other villages along the southwest coast of crete which are a very long drive away, if reachable by car at all.
- Starting from Palaiochora every morning, the ferry stops in sougia at approximately 09:20 continuing its course to Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Chora Sfakion and (some days) the southernmost point of Europe- Gavdos.
- The same route is done backwards in the afternoon stopping in Sougia at 18:30 ad then reaching its final destination - Palaiochora. Click here to visit the ferry's official website.

Unfortunately, there is no pharmacy in Sougia.The nearest pharmacies are in Kantanos and in Palaiochora, which are about 25km and 30km away. - ATM/Cash Machine
There is an ATM/Cash Machine in Sougia, which is installed outside of the infirmary of Sougia, 50m north from the main square of the village. According to its private company, it will operate from April till October. - Gas Station
It would be wise to fill up your car before visiting Sougia. The nearest gas stations are in Agia Irini, Kantanos, and Palaiochora, which are approximately 20km, 25km, and 30km away.
